Description
Bioluminescence occurs in nature on plants and in many aquatic species throughout our vast ocean waters. It is striking when one encounters is in caves or nestled in the surrounding foliage. For a top source for information I would recommend the Smithsonian site: https://ocean.si.edu/ocean-life/fish/bioluminescence. A most similar interesting aspect I have ever encountered was cause by the phosphorescence of the sands at nighttime at Ponte Vedra Beach south of Jacksonville, Florida where I went to college. Great party spot! Loved to watch the footprints in the sand light up at night! But, while similar, it is not quite the same. Phosphorescence is more like fluorescence, but at a much slower emission rate. Researching all three is fascinating, and opens a whole new way of envisioning the world we live in; however, really totally understanding all of it would require a course in quantum mechanics. However we don’t have to go quite that far to appreciate the beauty that they all offer in nature and in our art. Right now as I’m readying to upload this piece, I just observed a firefly indoors, a perfect example of bioluminescence we appreciate but often take for granted without knowing what it’s all about.
